Detail A3 — Generative engine optimisation

Get recommended when people ask AI.

Ask ChatGPT for a good accountant in Bristol and it names a few firms. GEO is the work of making sure your business is one of the names it gives, and that what it says about you is right.

Notes — How assistants choose

How an AI assistant decides who to mention.

  1. 01Many assistants search the web before they answer, then summarise what they find and cite their sources.
  2. 02They favour businesses described the same way in many places: your website, your Google profile, directories, reviews and articles.
  3. 03They need plain facts to repeat: what you do, where, for whom and what's different about you. Vague marketing copy gives them nothing to work with.
  4. 04When the information about a business is thin or contradictory, they pick someone else, or get the details wrong.

General notes — FAQ

Questions about GEO.

Can you guarantee ChatGPT will recommend us?

No. Nobody controls what an assistant says, and its answers change from one conversation to the next. We can make you a far clearer and better-supported choice, and we test the answers every month so you can see what changes.

Is GEO replacing SEO?

No. Assistants that search the web often draw on pages that already rank well, so good SEO still does a lot of the work. GEO adds what matters most to AI: consistent facts, mentions on trusted sites and plain descriptions.

Which assistants do you check?

ChatGPT, Google's Gemini and AI Overviews, Microsoft Copilot, Perplexity and Claude. We focus on the ones your customers are most likely to use.

Should we let AI companies crawl our site?

For AI search, yes: blocking their search crawlers keeps you out of their answers. Letting them use your content to train their models is a separate choice, and we'll explain the trade-off so you can decide.
